Mosley excited to fight Pacquiao

Shortly after Top Rank big boss Bob Arum confirmed that the two are going to slug it out on May 7 next year at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, the 39-year-old American puncher reached out to boxing writers across the US, telling them how thrilled he is to face Pacquiao and how he will dismantle the Filipino dynamo.

“I'm a bigger guy than him and he gets hit,” Mosley told Dan Rafael of ESPN.com. “And you saw how I hurt Floyd (Mayweather). Manny is going to come forward and I will hit him on the chin at some point. His defense is not like Floyd's. Manny will come at me, and I will knock him out."

Mosley is drawing inspiration from his fight last May against Mayweather, who outpointed him but who himself was badly hurt in the early goings.

Even though he is pushing 40 – as he is turning another leaf in September 2011 – Mosley said he remains a livewire opponent. I know that they think I'm an old man and that Manny is going to beat me. Let them think that.”

“I still have power and speed. They thought I was done before I knocked out (Antonio) Margarito, too. So they can think whatever they want. I know what I can do.”

Interestingly, Margarito stayed upright and went 12 rounds with Pacquiao last November 13 in Texas.

Against Mosley in January 2009, the usually-durable Margarito simply could not withstand the power on Mosley blows after being sent down twice before the referee intervened in the carnage.

Even Freddie Roach is not counting out Mosley, who the venerable trainer believes is in the twilight but remains a threat.

Mosley has never been knocked out in his stellar 17-year career, having traded bombs with the likes of Oscar De La Hoya, who he beat twice, Ricardo Mayorga and Miguel Cotto.

Roach said he is ready to pack his bags once again and spend four weeks in Baguio with Pacquiao and the remaining four weeks at the Wild Card in Hollywood.

In case Pacquiao decides he will need a shorter time training for Mosley, Roach will suggest that his fighter spend six solid weeks under him at the Wild Card.

Pacquiao vs Mosley

Manny Pacquiao yesterday said his May 7 fight with Shane Mosley is not going to be an easy fight.

Pacquiao was asked to comment on the thoughts of boxing experts that Mosley isn’t the wise choice when there’s Juan Manuel Marquez or Andre Berto calling his name.

Pacquiao paused for a couple of seconds.

“Magaling si Mosley (He’s good),” was the pound-for-pound champion’s delayed answer.

“Hindi easy fight ‘yan (It’s not an easy fight),” added the 32-year-old Pacquiao, who will spend Christmas in his favorite nest in Boracay, the posh West Cove Resort.

The reigning WBC super-welterweight champion had to remind everybody that Mosley knocked out Antonio Margarito in the ninth round of their January 2009 fight.

For 12 hard rounds, Pacquiao threw bricks at Margarito last Nov. 14 at the Cowboys Stadium, but failed to send the 5-foot-11 Mexican down on the floor even once.

Mosley also defeated Oscar dela Hoya twice, in 2000 for the welterweight crown, and in 2003 for the light-middleweight title.

“Wala namang easy fight dyan (There’s no easy fight out there),” said Pacquiao.

“They said Margarito was an easy fight. But you all saw that it was not. Easy ba ‘yun? And Mosley knocked out Margarito,” added Pacquiao, chilling out in Boracay.

Mosley, 39, thinks he’s so good he vowed to knock Pacquiao out.

Pacquiao flew to Boracay on a private plane from General Santos City Thursday noon with his family, and according to his host, resort owner Cris Aquino, Pacquiao slept the whole afternoon.
